This week, we look at the creation of mankind. We ask the question, posed by David in Psalm 8, "What is man?" We see in the creation account of Genesis chapter one that mankind (male & female) is created as the climax of the narrative - all that was formed and filled before is for the use of and rule over by mankind.
The text is important in that it reaveals first and formost what man is not. MAN IS NOT:
1. GOD
2. ANIMAL
Since man is neither God nor animal he should not act like he is either. Man is unique in all creation. He is to live in obedient submission to God and rule as steward over the rest of creation. The creation of man reveals our identity, capacity and destiny. What is key here is that our destiny and capacity flow out of our identity.
MAN IS THE IMAGO DEI:
1. SON/DAUGHTER IDENTITY
2. SERVANT/DISCIPLE CAPACITY
3. STEWARD/DEVELOPER DESTINY
For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of
God. For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear
again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we
cry out, "Abba! Father!" The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit
that we are children of God, and if children, heirs also, heirs of
God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that
we may also be glorified with Him.
