ESL Ministry

The Table's ESL program partners with the Hispanic church to provide their adult congregation an opportunity to learn English fluently. They have a vibrant, growing church, and it is a privilege to be able to add to their ministries.

Most of the students are from Guatemala and speak two languages already – Spanish and their local Mayan dialect. The students who participate are so hungry for an education and have the desire to learn more than just a survival level of English. Many of them want to master the language so they can read books in English, get promotions at work, go to college, or even just to be able to talk confidently to their children's teachers.

Currently our program has two levels of students taught by six volunteer teachers. The class meets Mondays and Wednesdays from 7-9 p.m. every week. Anyone is welcome to volunteer with this ministry. No experience is needed – simply a desire to serve.

This ministry is led by Rebecca Mayer, a member of The Table.

About Rebecca:

"I am a writer and therefore a lover of language. I am also a student of culture and diversity. The ESL program is a fusion of those two interests. I feel compelled by God to help my community and my church in a tangible way, and I feel that I actually need to help – that it is a vital part of my own spiritual growth. Communication is a basic need, and the inability to communicate can create inequities within society. I am passionate about equalizing that disparity and helping the foreigners in our city to become a more active part of our community."
