My journey

I was raised in the church and am a pastor’s kid (PK).  I felt called early on in life to “pass it on”. Initially borne out in an evangelistic fervor to share my faith in grade school, high school and college, but ultimately fulfilled as a 6th Grade teacher and coach for over thirty years and as a church Elder and adult Sunday School teacher.  In recent years, as the Director of Northwest Passage, a reality has become very clear to me.  “Love the Lord” and “love your neighbor” are divinely tied together.  His image is in the people He has created.  I will see and know Him as I enter into their lives and find His fingerprints.  To truly love God I need to genuinely love others.  To find the face of God, I must intimately engage with the individuals He has put me in relationship with.  That requires an openness and honesty not usually expressed in our society.    At a Spiritual formation retreat I attended several years ago we reflected on the wedding at Cana where Jesus turned the water into wine.  I was challenged to consider whether God was saving His best wine in life for my retirement years.  I believe He has destined me to build new relationships, to connect with my community and culture, to share my love for Jesus and His word, to disciple.  “Go therefore and make disciples” has become a very personal calling.  I look forward to the taste of that “good wine”.

Hobbies

My strengths revealed by the StrengthsFinder test are BELIEF, IDEATION, CONNECTEDNESS, INPUT & LEARNER.  Maybe that’s why I love to read.  If you visit my home and wander into my study you’ll find a stack of new books I plan to digest.  That’s in addition to the several I have scattered around the house that I’ve already started!  I’m a life-long athlete with a passion for basketball and backpacking (something I passed on to my kids).  As Oregonians, we are blessed to live so close to some of God’s best handiwork.  Since I retired from teaching, golf has become a regular diversion.  I’m also a music lover.  I have large collection of LPs and CDs, most of which have found their way onto my ipod.  I could while away an entire day listening to tunes!
